Wind direction

S (180°) → SW (225°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

6–10 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-altitude thermal launch on Jupiter Peak above Park City (~9,900 ft), managed by UHGPGA. Flies on a southerly (SW-S-SE, roughly 140-230); north wind is a real hazard, especially mid-afternoon. Extreme density altitude means true ground speed is well above indicated airspeed — a demanding site best suited to strong pilots, not average P3s. The window is narrow (often ~11:00-12:30) before it overdevelops; storms and gust fronts are a serious May-Aug danger. Access via Guardsman Pass (seasonal closure) then about a half-mile hike. P3/H3 with USHPA + UHGPGA membership.
