What we look for at Marmot Hatcher Pass AK

Wind direction

ESE (120°) → SSW (200°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–10 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Thermal site at Hatcher Pass managed by the Arctic Air Walkers, with a flat SW-facing launch that lines up with the up-valley flow. Best in S-to-SW winds at 5-10 mph, and there are multiple launch options around the peak for other directions. The biggest danger is overdevelopment: cumulonimbus regularly tower past 30,000 ft and can suck pilots back into the remote Talkeetna Mountains, so launch early and land before it builds. P2 minimum, P3 for XC; access is via the Fishhook trailhead, with a weather station above launch.
