Chief's Peak in the Topa Topa Mountains above Ojai - a smooth south-facing rocky slope and a thermal/XC launch over the Sespe gorge (actual launch ~4,800 ft). Works best in a south wind, SSE through SSW; avoid any north, east, or west component. A little breeze helps the takeoff. Minimum Hang 2 with high-altitude experience, and a more experienced pilot along is recommended. Access is via Rose Valley campground road and needs a USFS permit from the Ojai ranger district; glide is about 4:1 to grass LZ fields in Upper Ojai. Best midday to afternoon on thermic days - watch for overdevelopment.
