Lake Michigan dune-soaring site (Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore). Club guide (Arctic Air Walkers) gives ideal wind W to NNW, 290-340 deg with ~10 deg variance. PG speeds 0-12 mph base, gust no more than ~5 mph over base; HG 5-15 mph. The large central bowl faces N/NW and is forgiving/good for beginners and kiting; occasional mid-winter soaring on N or S face. HAZARDS: be very wary of moderate-to-strong SE winds in the surrounding area (downwind/rotor and switching conditions). Best season: spring and early summer (best XC); winds must align with the dune face. ACCESS: powerless flight only allowed 2nd Saturday in September through 3rd Sunday in May (prohibited during beach season for erosion/safety); $25 annual NPS permit required from the Chief Ranger's Office. Speed/gust marginal arc widened to N (360) and W (280) edges where lift weakens or becomes cross.
