What we look for at Mount Baldy

Wind direction

NNW (340°) → NE (40°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Lake Michigan dune-soaring site in Indiana Dunes National Park. The wide central bowl faces north/northwest, is forgiving, and is good for beginners and kiting; it soars in winds from the west around to north. Beware strong SE winds in the area, which bring rotor and switchy air. Powerless flight is only permitted from the 2nd Saturday in September through the 3rd Sunday in May (banned during beach season), and a $25 annual NPS permit from the Chief Ranger's office is required. Best XC in spring and early summer.
