Wind direction

S (180°) → W (270°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

7–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

North-side Columbia Gorge thermal/soaring launch near White Salmon (~2250 ft), facing the river. Works in the up-gorge S-through-W flow; avoid north winds, which are leeside and rotory over launch. The Gorge venturi can accelerate west wind hard and build through the day, so keep speeds conservative and watch for overdevelopment and blow-back. Best mid-afternoon; managed by the Cascade Paragliding Club, and quieter than the busier nearby Cliffside.
