Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Foot-launch thermal and XC site on a big NW-SE ridge east of I-8 (SDHGPA). Launch faces WSW and works on a SW wind, ideal 220-260 at roughly 5-10 mph. Do not launch when the wind crosses from the right (W-NW) — a strong hidden rotor forms off launch and has injured pilots; wind clocks NW through the day, so stay well above the ridge once it does. Best early-winter afternoons or spring/summer glass-off; summer midday is turbulent with low aircraft overhead. H2/P2, SDHGPA membership recommended; high-clearance drive-up or ~45-min hike. Watch CNF road closures on Sheephead Mountain Rd.
