What we look for at Goat Peak (Mazama)

Wind direction

SSE (150°) → SSW (210°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

South-facing thermal launch above Mazama in the Methow Valley, a clearing wide enough for one glider. Works best on S to SE flow; avoid west winds, which are rotor-prone. It's a thermic XC site that gets bumpy near takeoff, best June through August around midday before the valley wind builds, so P3+ and comfort scratching thermals near terrain are wanted. Land in the horse meadow near the Mazama store and don't spook the horses.
