What we look for at Mosquito Pass
Wind direction
WSW (247°) → NW (315°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
3–10 mph
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
High-alpine flying area in the Mosquito Range near Leadville (~13,000+ ft), known for strong thermals; no documented launch parameters exist publicly. Broadly works in a W-facing arc (SW through NW to N). At this altitude the air is thin and true airspeed far exceeds the indicated wind, so launch in light wind to keep penetration margin. Expect strong thermals and venturi/rotor through the pass; fly morning to early midday before overdevelopment. Expert mountain terrain with a long 4WD/hike approach.
