What we look for at Ptarmigan Peak

Wind direction

E (90°) → NW (315°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

2–10 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Advanced high-alpine launch (~13,714 ft) on a Sawatch 13er near Independence Pass and Aspen - not the Summit County Ptarmigan Peak. RMHPA flags it as lacking good legal access, so treat access as uncertain and coordinate with local pilots (RMHPA / Aspen Paragliding). Near-summit launch where you pick a face into the wind (E through NW work). Thin air means long launch runs and reduced margin; watch afternoon overdevelopment, strong thermals, and lee rotor. Morning to early-afternoon in light wind only; expert terrain with no retrieve infrastructure.
