What we look for at Yaquina Head

Wind direction

WSW (250°) → WNW (300°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

12–20 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Coastal cliff/ridge soaring on the Yaquina Head basalt headland north of Newport, flown on the prevailing onshore W wind — pilots work the north or south side depending on direction. Do NOT fly near the lighthouse: nesting peregrines and seabirds make that airspace restricted and BLM closures change seasonally, so check with park staff first. Rocky launch, grassy LZ by the visitor center or the beach. Coastal wind shifts fast and too much W brings cliff rotor. Not an official Cascade Paragliding Club site — coordinate locally.
