What we look for at Mount Sentinel
Wind direction
SSW (200°) → N (360°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
5–15 mph
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Mountain thermal site on the edge of Missoula with several launches (North Summit, SW, South, Cox) covering the arc from NW around through SW. Glide Missoula guide gives acceptable wind N through SSW, 0-20 mph. Strong west wind builds a dangerous venturi in the canyon between Sentinel and Jumbo - avoid it; expect rotor behind launch and ridgelines, and the east quadrant does not work. Midday thermals can be strong (altitude records near 15,000 ft). P3/M2 to fly solo, new pilots fly with a local first, USHPA membership required. Crazy Canyon Rd opens May 1 (approved vehicle list); paragliders can hike up year-round.
