What we look for at Hancock

Wind direction

SW (225°) → NW (315°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Remote west-facing mountain thermal/XC launch above Koosherem Reservoir (~9,350 ft), managed by CUASA, with a straight shot toward the Fish Lake plateau. Works on a westerly (SW-W-NW); any east component blows over the back into the lee. Light-to-moderate thermal cycles are ideal, and thin air makes true speeds higher than they read. Mostly 2WD drive-up with a tight tree-slot launch. Best morning to midday — watch for strong midday thermals and leeside rotor if the wind backs east. P3/H3 with USHPA + CUASA membership.
