What we look for here
  • Wind directionWSW (240°) → WNW (300°)
  • Ideal speed6–12 mph
  • Upper limits≤ 20 mph base · gusts ≤ 35

West-facing launch (8440 ft) above Koosherem; CUASA (Central Utah Air Sports) club guide gives explicit working wind FROM the W: ideal 240-300 deg, acceptable/marginal 225-315 deg. Easy first mountain site with ~30 miles of evening-soarable ridge plus strong afternoon thermals. Smooth laminar conditions in the morning; valley floor becomes thermic/turbulent after about 10-11 a.m. Thermals typically mellow ~2 hours before sunset (not guaranteed). Speed guidance varies by rating: PG ideal ~6 mph and max ~12 mph (P3); HG ideal ~12 mph, max ~20 mph (H3) so 20 mph is the max usable base for hang gliders, much lower for paragliders. Gust tolerance is small (only a few mph above base). Rating/access: H3/P3/M2 required plus USHPA and CUASA membership; min glide ~3.5. Hazards: power lines along the valley near the LZ (6781 ft, 2WD-accessible), cattle grazing at LZ, extremely limited or no cell service, and afternoon thermic turbulence/possible rotor in stronger flow. High-clearance 2WD road access.
