What we look for at Agave Hill

Wind direction

WSW (250°) → W (280°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

West-facing shallow slope launch in Franklin Mountains State Park, El Paso (RGSA site). Best on a WSW-W wind around 270 at 8-12 mph; south of ~240 the ridge weakens and launch turns turbulent, and any north component makes the wing thrash. Don't fly if it's over ~15 mph or gusty. Watch the Transmountain gap venturi, strong midday thermals April-Oct, and light katabatic flow near sunset. P3 minimum and current USHPA membership required.
