What we look for at Nelson's Launch

Wind direction

SW (230°) → WNW (290°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

West/SW-facing hike-and-fly PG site in Franklin Mountains State Park (20-40 min hike from the Ron Coleman trailhead). Best on a SW-W wind around 250-280 at 8-12 mph; avoid anything more southerly than ~240, which brings turbulence off North Mount Franklin. Max about 12-13 mph at launch - a venturi can pluck you above that. Snaggy launch, rotor just back from the slope edge in stronger wind, and near-invisible power lines in the valley and by the trailhead. The lighter-wind alternative to Agave; if the Transmountain picnic area reads over 12 mph, fly Agave instead. P3 and USHPA membership required, register with the park, reserve and speed bar mandatory.
