What we look for here
  • Wind directionSSW (200°) → WSW (250°)
  • Ideal speed5–15 mph
  • Upper limits≤ 15 mph base · gusts ≤ 12

SW-facing ridge ~1,000 ft above the flats in Coconino NF; ridge soaring and glass-off site. AZHPA guide: preferred wind directions WSW/SW/SSW (ideal ~200-250 deg), min base wind 5 mph, recommended 5-15 mph. Gust differential should be no more than 5 mph in 5 sec; in winds over 10-12 mph there is a real risk of getting plucked before turning. Cross launches more than 45 deg off, or gusty conditions, are dangerous. Hazards: small rocks and bushes that snag lines, and agave plants near the bottom of launch with extremely sharp tips that can puncture wings. Access via I-17 Exit 306 (Stoneman Lake Rd) then FS Rd 83 ~9 mi to Maid Trail. Requirements: current AZHPA + USHPA membership and H3/P2 or higher; P2 must be accompanied by a local P3+ familiar with the site and P2s may not fly mid-day. Glass-off (late afternoon/evening) is a noted use of the site.
