What we look for at Mt. Elden (Flagstaff)

Wind direction

S (190°) → W (260°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

0–10 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-altitude thermal site (~9,087 ft) just outside Flagstaff — a 35-degree grassy launch in a gap in the pines. Works in light WSW/SW wind (190-260) and it's a very light-wind spot: launch in the lulls between thermal cycles, and treat it as thermal flying, not ridge soaring. Watch for being blown back or sideways over the top (exit diagonally away from the mountain), and note the trees mask stronger wind aloft. Land at Buffalo Park, where the grass hides rocks and small cactus. Needs P3/H3, AZHPA+USHPA membership, and an on-site briefing from a local before you fly; winter road access can be closed.
