What we look for at Texas City Levee
Wind direction
NNE (20°) → ESE (120°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
8–18 mph
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Coastal levee on Galveston Bay flown by the TXWingNuts club (mostly powered paragliding and kiting). Works on smooth onshore flow from the N, E, and ESE; any west component comes over the refineries and land and is turbulent and dangerous. Don't overfly the protected bird sanctuary just west of launch or the congested airspace over Texas City. Best in a smooth morning or evening sea breeze; midday gets thermic.
