What we look for at Phipps

Wind direction

S (180°) → SW (225°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

SW-facing bluffs/rimrock on the southwest edge of Billings (~3,825 ft), at Phipps Park. No flying guide or pilot report was found, so the S-to-SW window is inferred, not confirmed. Expect rotor and thermal turbulence off the rimrock, with midday high-plains thermals getting rowdy - morning or evening glass-off is smoother. Launch, LZ, and access are unconfirmed; check with the Billings free-flight community before flying.
