What we look for at Mt Tamalpais

Wind direction

SSW (200°) → WNW (290°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

West-facing ridge launches on Bolinas Ridge (Marin County HGA / MCHGA). Three launches: A faces S/WSW (~190-250 deg), B faces NW-WNW (~290-315 deg), C faces W-NW (~270-315 deg). Combined ideal working arc is roughly SW through W (200-290 deg met). Launching in light/no wind is common and normal here. PG pilots should NOT launch when winds exceed 15 mph at launch; West winds over 15 mph or South winds over 25 mph produce dangerous turbulence and are avoided. Winds above ~10 mph at launch make it hard to penetrate/reach the Stinson Beach LZ, so treat ~10-12 mph as the practical comfortable ceiling. KEY HAZARD: in NW winds, the launch (Site 2) sits behind a rotor that can produce a deceptive west wind reading at launch even though you'd be launching into rotor/turbulence -- be cautious with NW-component flows. Other hazards: fog/overcast obscuring visibility, water landing at high tide (check tide table, especially winter/spring), private beach north of LZ. Park closes on Red Flag fire warnings (state park). Best season is Winter and Spring when storm instability gives good soaring; summer flights are shorter (~10 min). Rating: launches rated H3/P3; PG requires P3 minimum with MCHGA sponsor sign-off (sticker program), USHPA membership required.
