What we look for at Winchester Bowl

Wind direction

S (190°) → W (260°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

6–14 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Inland thermic bowl launch (~1,850 ft) near Diamond Valley Lake, north of Temecula/Hemet. Works on S-through-W winds centered on the SW. Best just after sunrise before the valley breeze and thermals ramp up; afternoons get strong and gusty. Watch for lee rotor if the wind backs into the N/E, plus midday dust devils. Wind-speed numbers are estimates, not site-verified.
