What we look for at Santa Monica- Malibu - Corral Canyon

Wind direction

SSE (150°) → SSW (210°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Coastal soaring ridge on the Pacific east of Pepperdine in Malibu, launching south toward the ocean around 545 ft. It works on the afternoon south-quadrant sea breeze; mornings are usually too light. A Santa Ana (offshore NE) shuts it down and makes it dangerous with lee-side rotor. The launch is tree-bounded, so keep it to light-to-moderate wind. Popular with SoCal pilots and used for tandem instruction.
