Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
West-facing Owens Valley launch in the White Mountains just east of Bishop, the most accessible of the main White Mtn takeoffs (4x4 to launch). Afternoon thermal and XC site with the classic Owens glass-off; Paiute and Gunter sit ~800 m higher and turn on earlier. This is powerful 'Big Air' — violent thermal turbulence and rotor are the main hazard, worst in midsummer midday heat. Experienced mountain/XC pilots only (H3, H2 with instructor); best months May/early June and September/mid-October.
