Wind direction
WSW (250°) → WNW (290°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
9–15 mph
The sweet spot — strong enough to soar, comfortably under the limit.
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Coastal soaring ridge ("The Dumps"/Mussel Rock) with laminar Pacific sea breeze. Works best for a due-West (~270) wind; light SW acceptable. Multiple launches span the SSW-NNW arc (Walker is most popular and handles SW-NW; Cheetah is an advanced SSW-WSW launch; S/late-evening days favor Cheetah). Critical: wind accelerates dramatically up the cliffs - ~12-13 mph at launch can be 20+ mph at the 600 ft cliff top, so launch-level base wind should stay modest (roughly mid-teens cap) to avoid blowback. Hazards: blowback into power lines and houses along the Westlake cliffs, and landing in the ocean - both have caused fatalities. Frequent thick fog and gusty, complex conditions. Best flown by experienced pilots; P2 minimum (P3-P4 for harder launches), unrated/unregulated site - get a full site intro from the local club before flying. Common reference stations: Cheetah (WNW-facing), Mussel Rock WX, nearby Fort Funston.
