Mt Greylock's eastern summit is the only east-facing launch in New England. Best wind direction is straight EAST; the launch also works with NE through SE winds (ideal arc centered ~90 deg E, roughly 67-113; marginal/cross extends NE ~45 to SSE ~157 per the orientation hint). Wind speed: hang gliding launch requires a minimum of 10 mph, paragliding launch a minimum of 8 mph; maximum usable wind is 25 mph for both. Two launches: HG launch is a short flat slope off the mowed grass on the SE side; PG launch is a slight-slope-to-cliff about 400 yards north of it (better for lighter wind). Landing: Amy's Field behind McCann trade school is the primary LZ for both; Greylock Glen directly below the PG launch is a PG-only alternate. Rating/access: HG requires Advanced (H4); PG requires Advanced (P4) or Intermediate with exceptional ground handling; intermediates may fly only under direct supervision of a qualified USHPA observer/examiner/advanced instructor. P4 cited as ~75 hr / 250 flights / 80 flying days. ACCESS RESTRICTION: the state (DCR) closed Mt Greylock to paragliders and hang gliders on WEEKENDS (Berkshire Eagle, 2024) - weekday flying only. Site is managed by the Massachusetts Hang Gliding Association (MassHGA); coordinate with them before flying. Cliff launch demands solid ground handling; avoid winds outside the NE-SE arc to prevent cross/rotor on launch.
