What we look for at Mt Greylock

Wind direction

ENE (67°) → ESE (113°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–18 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

The only east-facing launch in New England, on the summit of Mt Greylock and maintained by MassHGA. Best in straight east wind, working NE through SE, roughly 8-25 mph. There is a short HG slope on the SE side and a slight-slope PG launch about 400 yards north; primary LZ is Amy's Field. Advanced site (H4/P4), with lower ratings only under direct supervision of a qualified USHPA observer/examiner/instructor. The state (DCR) has closed the mountain to gliders on weekends, so plan on weekday flying and coordinate with MassHGA.
