Mt. Brace (Taconic State Park, NY/MA border near Boston Corner/Millerton). Official Mt. Brace Outdoor Club site guide: ideal wind WNW-WSW (~250-290 deg), acceptable arc roughly 230-310 deg. Ideal speed 8-10 mph; usable roughly 0-15 mph at launch. Hard rule: NO flying when winds exceed 26 mph (treat as max gust ceiling). Launch is a narrow, shallow-sloped slot flanked by bushes/small trees on both sides and below, demanding strong ground handling; crosswinds produce rotor/turbulence off the surrounding trees and along the ridge. Smooth and beginner-kind in early morning and late afternoon; becomes thermic/active midday (~11am-4pm) with good XC potential for advanced pilots - SIV plus intermediate rating recommended for the thermic window. Access: USHPA membership + Mt. Brace Outdoor Club membership and signed waiver required; P3/H3 to fly unobserved, P2/H2 only with an observer. Strenuous access (30-min back-road drive + 35-min trail hike, or a 60-90 min hike up the face). Call the park ranger (518-329-3993) to report flying activity. Note: one secondary source lists launch elevation ~1600 ft MSL vs the 2300 ft given - the prompt elevation may be summit vs flight-line.
