What we look for at Brace

Wind direction

WSW (250°) → WNW (290°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Mt. Brace sits on Taconic State Park land at the NY/MA/CT corner, with the landing zone run by the Mt. Brace Outdoor Club. Best on WNW-WSW winds, ideal around 8-10 mph, and never fly it above 26 mph. The launch is a narrow, tree-flanked slot that demands solid ground handling, and crosswinds throw rotor off the surrounding trees and ridge; it's smooth mornings and evenings but thermic and XC-capable midday. You need USHPA plus Mt. Brace Outdoor Club membership and a signed waiver, P3/H3 to fly unobserved (P2/H2 with an observer), and access is a long back-road drive plus a steep hike.
