SW-facing ridge with a covered metal launch ramp; classic first-mountain-flight site. Ideal wind is straight SW, 235 (from left) to 245 (from right); the club lists the core arc as roughly 225-250 and the site remains usable in light S through light W. PG ideal ~8 mph (max ~10 mph), HG ideal ~10 mph (max 15 mph). Do NOT launch in winds over 15 mph: produces nasty shear turbulence on the glide to the LZ. Avoid gusty west winds for paragliders - easy to get carried into the metal ramp (pilots have been dragged into and collided with the ramp). Forward launches are very committing for PGs and not recommended unless skilled. Rotor over the back/sides of the ridge and in the lee of mountains across the valley; keep at least 1:1 glide to the ridge when above and behind it. Watch low air density / weak launches on hot, humid days. Best time of day ~11am-5pm once sun heats valley and launch face. Rating: H3/P3 to fly solo; H2/P2 only with USHPA observer (HG) or mentor (PG). LZ is the large hay/corn field between Route 4A and I-4. Access via Whipple Hollow Rd to a gate, or a 45-60 min hike; contact VHPA. Elevation listed locally as ~1729-1839 ft MSL.
