What we look for at Wellfleet

Wind direction

ENE (70°) → E (90°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Coastal dune ridge-soaring at White Crest Beach — the original New England HG/PG site. It works in ENE wind straight into the dunes (about 070-090), roughly 8-15 mph for a standard paraglider; do not launch a standard wing over 15. On good days you can soar miles of coastline. Hazards: rotor behind the ridge, getting blown back over the top, and a narrow beach with open Atlantic below (water landings are dangerous). Flying is permitted only Oct 2 through Apr 14 by town permit; H3/P3, or H2/P2 with a mentor.
