Wind direction
W (270°) → NW (320°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
8–15 mph
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Curtis Canyon, east of Jackson by the National Elk Refuge. The Upper Bench launch (~7,350 ft) faces WNW and is preferred for soaring/XC. JHFFC gives 270-320 degrees, up to 18 mph, ideal around 10. The Elk Refuge borders the lower LZ to the west and landing in it is prohibited, and the gentle lower LZ is easy to overshoot, so plan a low final. It's thermic midday and the flow turns katabatic near sunset. Closed Dec 1 - Apr 30 for wildlife. P2/H2 minimum.
