What we look for here
  • Wind directionSE (140°) → SSW (210°)
  • Ideal speed4–12 mph
  • Upper limits≤ 20 mph base · gusts ≤ 22

South-facing hike-and-fly butte in downtown Jackson, WY (~1200' steep, exposed hike via unmarked game trail on private land with owner permission; road to top is private/closed). JHFFC club guide: ideal wind 140-210 deg, min 0 / max 20 mph, ideal ~8 mph. P3 minimum due to technical, visible LZ at Karns Meadow (shared with Snow King). LZ hazards: power lines and creek on S/E boundaries, Teton County SAR helipad on SW corner (avoid soaring near it), and mechanical rotor off a large bus barn west of the field. Valley wind funnels and accelerates SW-to-NE through the gap between EGVB and Josie's Ridge; expect increasing valley wind and mechanical rotor especially on hot summer afternoons. Best flown morning / early evening glass-off to avoid strong afternoon valley flow and overdevelopment. Good go-to / mini-wing option, useful when other sites are closed Dec 1-Apr 30 for wildlife. Do not fly over congested areas (rodeo grounds). Contact a JHFFC club member before visiting.
