Nelson's Butte, Jackson Hole WY — WSW-facing ridge soaring/glass-off site managed by the Jackson Hole Free Flight Club (local USHPA chapter). Ideal wind FROM 240-300 deg; club guide gives explicit speed numbers: min 0, ideal ~8 mph, max usable base 20 mph. Marginal arc ~220-240 (SW edge) and 300-320 (NW edge) becomes cross/edge. HAZARDS: power lines run along the base of the butte — stay east of them unless above ridgetop. Venturi acceleration through gaps/canyons north and south of the butte slows ground speed and creates strong patches. Winds aloft above the ridge are typically stronger than at launch — check forecasts before committing. Steep sidehill launch requiring solid ground-handling. BEST TIME: evenings, classic valley evening glass-off. ACCESS/RATING: P2/H2 (Intermediate) minimum. SEASONAL CLOSURE: closed Dec 1 - Apr 30 for wildlife habitat protection. Elevation ~6834 ft MSL — thin air, expect longer ground runs and faster effective wing speed.
