What we look for at Lee Vining

Wind direction

ENE (70°) → ESE (115°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

3–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-elevation (~9,700 ft) east-facing thermal launch above Mono Lake, Eastern Sierra. Works on a light easterly on morning thermal cycles. It's a lee slope under the prevailing W/SW Sierra flow, so avoid any day with westerly gradient — expect heavy rotor behind the crest. Afternoon up-canyon wind builds and often reverses, making conditions strong and unpredictable; thin air means faster launches and wing response. No published club guide — verify direction, access and LZ with Eastern Sierra locals. Intermediate/advanced.
