Makapuu is Oahu's premier ridge-soaring site on the SE tip of the island, a ~3-mile coastal ridge fed by reliable ENE trade winds. The Hawaiian club guide (windlines.net) gives explicit numbers: usable wind FROM ~20-90 deg, with 40-90 deg (NE-ENE-E) ideal. Trades are normally ENE, which is the classic everyday condition. Speed: roughly 5-18 mph wind, ideal ~10 mph; launches close when launch-measured wind exceeds ~16 mph. Note strong direction sensitivity: a given LZ speed reads much stronger on launch (e.g. easterly 4-8 mph at the LZ = 8-12 mph on launch), and NNE wind accelerates/blasts through the gap so it feels much stronger than the same speed from ENE. Multiple launch points exist: the Hang launch (1200 ft sheer drop) is restricted to HANG GLIDERS ONLY, minimum Hang-IV rating, AWCL skill signoff, accessed via two locked gates, and visiting pilots must be accompanied by a local; the Cactus launch (~400 ft MSL, 15-min hike from the lookout parking) is the paragliding/mini-wing spot, rated P3 (PG) and M2 (mini-wing). Hazards: tall sea cliffs, venturi/gap acceleration on more northerly flow, rotor and overdevelopment of trades, and ocean LZ proximity. Best flown on steady moderate ENE trades, generally midday to afternoon when trades fill in; avoid high-wind days and strongly N/NNE flow. Visiting pilots should connect with the local club for access and a site briefing.
