Coastal cliff soaring site on a ~165 ft NW-facing ocean bluff above the Eel River delta / South Spit of Humboldt Bay, 12 mi south of Eureka. Works in onshore NW flow: northwesterly winds hit the cliff and are forced up, producing reliable ridge lift. Ideal wind is FROM the NW (perpendicular to the cliff); N and W are the cross/marginal edges. The prevailing summer sea breeze regime is NW, so it can be soarable most of the day (pilots report flying 9 a.m. to dark in good conditions). Thermal enhancement possible over warm coastal mudflats near Hookton Slough. Hazards: very small site with a short ridge, so it is a tight launch/soaring area and gets crowded with multiple pilots; being a sea cliff it can build to over-the-back/blowback conditions quickly if the NW strengthens, and lee-side rotor exists behind the bluff edge. Watch for marine layer/fog and strong afternoon onshore gradient. Winter brings S winds with cold fronts (off-orientation, generally not soarable on this NW face). No explicit USHPA chapter numeric wind limits were found; speed ranges inferred from a low coastal cliff site of this scale. Site is a county park used as a hang gliding / paragliding staging area; instruction strongly recommended for newcomers.
