Iron Mt is an infrequently-flown SDHGPA (San Diego HG/PG Association) site, SW/W-facing. Club guide gives explicit numbers: ideal wind FROM 220-250 deg (SW-W), acceptable 215-265 deg; min 7 mph, ideal 7-10 mph, max ~15 mph. Best in evening glass-off; can be very turbulent and strong in summer. ADVANCED site: rated P4+/H4+ (M2+), requires multiple years of solid P4 experience. Major hazards: unimproved boulder/mine-field terrain with many obstacles, complex terrain producing unpredictable micro wind directions, NO official landing zones, and severe airspace restriction (~3,800 ft ceiling from Miramar MCAS approach giving only ~1,000 ft above launch). SDHGPA explicitly recommends against flying here, steering pilots to Little Black or Big Black Mountain for safer, better conditions. Site-rep briefing and a local pilot are essential.
