Site = "Little Black" / Black Mountain Open Space Park Glider Port, San Diego (SDHGPA - USHPA chapter). Numbers are for the primary "300" launch (15-20 min hike from the LZ/parking via Glider Point Trail). SDHGPA guide: ideal direction 240-300 deg, acceptable 220-320 deg (SW to NW). PG ideal ~9 mph, max 15 mph; HG ideal ~10 mph, max ~20 mph. Best conditions widely cited as ~7-12 mph; max usable base ~15 mph (PG) with gust spread held tight (~5-7 mph). Other launches differ: "500" (P3+) is more SW-focused, ideal 220-250 / acceptable 190-270; "800" is a precipitous cliff/road-cut launch, ideal 270-300 / acceptable 260-320, P4 cliff-launch experience required. HAZARDS: significant venturi + mechanical rotor on the north side and over Glider Point Trail as prevailing west wind wraps around the end of the ridge - multiple pilot injuries reported; avoid going below ~200 ft above launch in anything other than NW. Road cut produces rotor near the LZ in W-NW. Single safe LZ (no alternates); power lines at mountain base below the 500/800 launches; steep brush/granite riprap. Rattlesnakes year-round. Airspace ceiling ~3000 ft. SEASON: fall through spring is best; summer is turbulent and midday flying is generally not recommended. Rating: H2/P2 minimum for the 300 launch (upgrades to P3/H3 in strong conditions); higher launches need P3+/P4.
