Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Popular SDHGPA foot-launch at the Black Mountain Open Space Park glider port, San Diego; numbers are for the main '300' launch (15-20 min hike from the LZ). Works on a SW-NW wind, ideal 240-300, PG ~9 mph (max 15), HG ~10 (max ~20). Prevailing west wind wraps the end of the ridge into strong venturi and rotor on the north side and over Glider Point Trail — stay above ~200 ft over launch unless it's NW; multiple pilots have been hurt there. Single LZ with no alternate, power lines below the higher launches, rattlesnakes year-round, ~3,000 ft ceiling. Best fall through spring. H2/P2 for the 300; higher launches need P3+/P4. Lot gates off after heavy rain.
