Where it is
What we look for at Hagelstein (Upper Klamath Lake)
Wind direction
WSW (240°) → WNW (300°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
8–15 mph
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
West-facing ridge (~8 km long) above Upper Klamath Lake, good for both ridge soaring and thermals; best in W flow, with SW and NW as the cross edges. Wind can build fast here and lee-wave/lenticular conditions form over the terrain, so bail if it ramps up or wave appears. Launch sits right beside a narrow paved road used by logging trucks, so don't park on or near it; landing at Hagelstein Park is large and easy. Access off Hwy 97.
