What we look for at Hadley Butte

Wind direction

NW (315°) → N (360°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

A north-facing flat launch above Summer Lake at about 6,200 ft, part of the Lakeview cluster. It works best in NW-to-N wind and is a thermal/XC site (100+ mi potential), not a ridge-soaring spot, so fly light-to-moderate wind with strong thermals — best mid-morning to early afternoon before the valley blows out. Watch dust devils, strong high-desert thermals, and lee rotor if the wind backs to S/SE. Remote Fremont National Forest access; intermediate-plus.
