North-facing flat launch above Summer Lake at ~6,200 ft MSL, part of the Lakeview, OR cluster ("Hang Gliding Capital of the West" — Black Cap, Sugar Hill, Doherty Slide). Works best in NW-through-N flow (~315-360); NW (~290-320) is the most commonly cited working direction, with N straight in. Marginal/cross when it swings to W or NE. This is primarily a high-desert THERMAL/XC site (XC potential 100+ mi), not a ridge-soaring site, so light-to-moderate winds with strong thermals are typical — best mid-morning to early afternoon before the valley overdevelops/blows out; the area is known for strong thermals, dust devils, and the potential for high desert winds, so launch on the lighter side and watch cycles. Lee-side rotor risk if wind backs to S/SE (downwind of the butte). Big high-desert LZs toward Summer Lake. Mostly an intermediate+ (H3/P3-type) destination given altitude, remoteness, and thermal strength. Access via Fremont National Forest (Paisley Ranger District); pack-in/pack-out, picnic table on site. Numeric speed window is inferred (no club guide gave explicit numbers); orientation confirmed by multiple sources.
