What we look for at Green Mountain

Wind direction

SSW (200°) → WSW (250°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

3–10 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Old Front Range foot-launch in William F. Hayden Park, Lakewood. Launch to the south and work around the ridge to the west once up; keep west light, since the Front Range to the west throws mechanical rotor. Light-wind thermal site with a ~600 ft hike on a good trail - mornings are calmest, afternoon thunderstorms common May-Aug. Lakewood requires a free non-expiring permit (show your P2 at the Bear Creek Lake Park visitor center). P2+; a fatal accident has happened here in rough west/strong air.
