What we look for at Spokane Hills

Wind direction

SSW (200°) → W (270°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Foothill launch in the Big Belt Mountains east of Helena, above the Helena Valley near Canyon Ferry Reservoir, around 5,000 ft. Works best on southwest-through-west wind blowing up the slope. Expect strong afternoon thermals and valley-wind convergence over the Helena Valley, possible lee turbulence off the Big Belts, and a lake breeze off Canyon Ferry; high elevation means faster true airspeed and longer landings. No club site guide exists, so scout it and check with Montana pilots first.
