What we look for at Little Sur (Monterey)

Wind direction

W (280°) → N (350°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

12–18 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

Low coastal bluff launch (~150 ft) south of Monterey, listed as CLOSED in the paragliding databases — confirm access with Coastal Condors before considering it. As a coastal soaring spot it faced the NW sea breeze (best on a steady onshore W-NW flow), with the usual bluff rotor, overpowering sea breeze, and summer marine-layer fog. Active local alternatives include Marina State Beach and Sand City.
