What we look for at Big Sur - Wild cattle

Wind direction

SSW (202°) → W (270°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

5–12 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

A west/southwest-facing Coast Ridge launch around 3,200 ft above the Pacific, working on the afternoon sea breeze. Ridge-soar until a thermal cycles, then fly south down the ridge to the Pacific Valley Bluff LZ on Hwy 1; often a sled ride otherwise. Whitecaps on the ocean mean too much wind - don't fly. Access is a long 4x4 drive up Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd then the narrow, cliff-edged dirt Coast Ridge Trail. Unregulated; P3/H3 recommended.
