Coastal soaring ridge on the San Luis Obispo County coast, managed by SLOSA (San Luis Obispo Soaring Association). Ideal wind direction WSW-NW, with the club guide listing ideal 280-310 deg and an OK/usable range of 270-320 deg. Ideal wind speed 10-18 mph overall; PG max usable ~15 mph (with gusts to 10 mph), HG can handle up to ~25 mph. Hazards: significant rotor behind ridges and at gully transitions; the flat ridge south of the Point Launch causes rotor (do not fly behind it). Watch for thermal/shear "block" (marine inversion) - most common when air temps reach/exceed ~63 deg F; symptoms include whitecaps on the water but no wind at launch, then extreme lift at the front of the block and extreme sink/turbulence on the inland back side. Wind tends to blow out in the afternoon and can push pilots back into rotor zones; cooler conditions (~58 deg F) fly best. Do not launch Secrets/Left spots in winds over 15. Best seasons spring, fall, and winter (winter least likely to thermal-block). IMPORTANT ACCESS: NO-FLY closure Mar 1 - Sep 30 for Plover (snowy plover) nesting season - only the Left/Secret spots are available during that window. Rating: P3/H3/M2 minimum (P2/H2 only with instructor supervision). USHPA + SLOSA membership and a checkout by a knowledgeable local pilot/instructor are required.
