SLOSA (San Luis Obispo Soaring Association) Cuesta Ridge site guide gives explicit numbers. Ideal wind direction 240-280 deg (W to WNW); usable 230-290 deg. PG ideal ~10 mph, min 5 mph, max 15 mph, max gust 10 mph (HG can take up to 25 mph). Predominantly a thermal site: thermals best with light southerly winds and clear skies, most common late fall to early spring. Thermal cycles typically start around noon, but winds get too strong by mid-afternoon for paragliders. HAZARDS: significant rotor behind ridges and at gully transitions; afternoon wind can increase rapidly and blow pilots back into rotor zones behind ridges. Climbs to over 5000 ft possible but often capped by inversion near 3500 ft. XC possible NW and SW along the ridge (remote/committing). ACCESS/RATING: minimum P3/H3 (P2/H2 with instructor supervision); requires USHPA + SLOSA membership, helmet, reserve, and minimum 7.0 glide ratio. Launch is in federal forest land off TV Tower Road on Cuesta Ridge west of Highway 101. Note: orientation hint listed N/SW/W/NW, but the club guide specifies the working arc as W/WNW (240-290); the southerly preference is for thermal triggering rather than soarable wind direction.
