What we look for at Laguna Lake

Wind direction

W (280°) → WNW (300°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–16 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

West-facing thermal/ridge site SW of San Luis Obispo (SLOSA), strong with 100+ mi XC potential. Ideal wind 280-300 (WNW) at roughly 8-16 mph; avoid northerly flow, which throws rotor off the ridge NW of launch. The whole hill and small LZ are strewn with sharp hidden volcanic rock — kite up rather than bringing the wing down low, and no mini/speed wings. Lower cliff launch for lighter wind, upper launch for more. Best mid-to-late afternoon. P3 minimum (P2 with instructor). Requires SLOSA + USHPA, helmet and reserve, a signed City of SLO waiver, and airspace coordination with the SLO tower before flying.
