What we look for here
  • Wind directionW (280°) → WNW (300°)
  • Ideal speed8–16 mph
  • Upper limits≤ 18 mph base · gusts ≤ 22

West-facing thermal/ridge site SW of San Luis Obispo ("mini Owens Valley"), strong conditions with 100+ mi XC potential. SLOSA site guide: ideal 280-300 deg (WSW-WNW), acceptable 270-310; ideal wind 8-16 mph. AVOID northerly directions - strong rotor forms off the hill-ridge NW of launch when winds turn northerly. Entire hill and shallow LZ are strewn with sharp volcanic rocks/boulders (often hidden by vegetation) - launch by kiting up midway, do not bring wing down low; not suitable for mini/speed wings. Lower cliff launch (paved access) is for lighter wind; upper launch (high-clearance vehicle or hike) handles more wind. Best mid-to-late afternoon. Rating: P3 minimum (P2 with instructor). ACCESS: USHPA + SLOSA membership, helmet + reserve required, signed City of SLO waiver plus medical/liability insurance on file, and airspace coordination required - check SBP ATIS 120.600 MHz or call (805)545-9638, then call ATA (805)781-8753 to request paragliding ops 4 mi NW of airport at/below 600 MSL.
