Coastal ridge/soaring site SE of Cayucos, CA (SLOSA / SLO Soaring Association chapter guide). Ideal wind FROM SW through W to NNW (~225-337 deg). Usable in "just about any direction except east"; S and N are marginal/cross. Rating: Intermediate (H-3/P-3) minimum; Novice only with instructor supervision; training not recommended due to hazards. New pilots must be checked out by a knowledgeable local pilot/instructor. HAZARDS: lee-side rotor near the summit; site tends to "thermal block" above/in front of the beach; strong onshore ocean winds can produce rotor and very turbulent air in front of launch even when launch itself looks benign. Below launch: barbed-wire fences, homes, Highway 1 and beachfront housing — ensure ample altitude before crossing. PG LZ is the beach just south of the southernmost beachfront house (public access); HG LZ is the small parking pullout on Hwy 1 across from Toro Creek Rd, ~1 mi south of last beach house. Do NOT land in the open area south of the hill (private ranch, trespassing). Ridge with some thermal influence when warm; convergence can form forward of launch / along the beach. Best in spring, intermittently good most of the year. Speed range and gust limits are inferred (typical coastal soaring) — no explicit mph published in the guide.
