What we look for at New Jack City

Wind direction

NE (45°) → ESE (112°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

High-desert ridge-soaring site in the OHV country east of Lucerne Valley (~4,000 ft). East-facing launch; wants NE-to-E wind onto the slope, roughly 8-15 mph. Desert air is gusty with strong midday thermal cycles and dust devils, so fly early morning or late afternoon when it smooths out. Wind aloft can be much stronger than at launch. Remote BLM/OHV land with rough access and little cell coverage; get local knowledge before flying.
