What we look for at Grizzly Mountain

Wind direction

S (180°) → SW (225°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

7–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

A high-desert ridge near Prineville (~5,600 ft) that faces roughly S to SW. Desert Air Riders lists it as CLOSED at the landowner's request, so it's off-limits — don't fly without confirmed permission. When it was flown it worked on S-SW wind; expect strong, rowdy midday desert thermals with the smoothest air at evening glass-off, like the club's nearby Pine Mountain sites.
