Wind direction
SW (225°) → W (280°)
The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.
Ideal speed
10–18 mph
Ceiling · Paragliding
≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23
Top of the range for paragliding (any rating) — switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.
Coastal ridge-soaring hill (Maxwell Mtn) above the village of Oceanside, facing the Pacific roughly W/SW. Works on onshore flow: SW is prime (pilots regularly soar and land on the beach on SW days fall through spring), W is reliable, S goes cross. Ridge lift rather than thermal. Watch for fast-shifting and strengthening onshore wind, showers, and rotor/compression around the rounded hilltop and offshore rocks. Hosts the annual Oceanside Open each April; nearby Cape Lookout is a separate, far more demanding site.
