What we look for at Woodstock

Wind direction

W (280°) → NW (320°)

The wind must blow from within this arc. Direction is the same for both wings.

Ideal speed

8–15 mph

Ceiling · Paragliding

≤ 19 mph base · gusts ≤ 23

Top of the range for paragliding (any rating). Switch wings up top to compare. Hang gliders hold roughly 10 mph more than paragliders.

CHGPA-owned foot-launch on the western slope of Massanutten Mountain, over the Shenandoah Valley. The launch slot sits between two HG ramps and works best in W to NW; a spine left of launch makes a west cross rough, and any north component is the limiting hazard. A venturi at launch makes real wind stronger than the valley forecast, so keep speeds conservative. Strong thermals in season, winter wave possible, and good evening glass-off. Day-use only, no fees, H2/P2 with an observer.
